Chapter Eight

Gale

It’s around two in the morning when Topaz comes back into the apartment, his movements careful and quiet, but not quiet enough for me not to notice them. The door to his room opens and closes. He moves around in his room, before he drops on his bed, and everything goes quiet again. I don’t smell the stink of booze in the air, but the guy was definitely off, I just don’t know from what.

In the last days, since I moved in, I’ve started to recognise how every person moves, what they sound like as they do things. I can almost recognise them just by the way they walk down the hall, or the way they sigh. It’s hard to have to familiarise myself with new people, having to learn all these things about them, all of the ways in which they are themselves. I’ve worked with and lived with the same people for years, we knew almost everything about each other, but now I’m the only one left here... I have to start all over. Not my greatest trait.

Sitting up, I let my eyes wander around the room, ending on my bag in the corner, and I wish I could just leave. I wish I could grab my bag and leave, but I have nowhere to go. I have nowhere to return to, no family, no friends, nothing. The rebels were my home, my family, but I’m the only one left of our squad, our close-knitted group. Just me, all alone again.

A soft sound at the door makes me still, and when I look up, Sophia is standing in the doorway, having quietly pushed the door open, waiting for me to notice her. I was so lost in thought that I hadn’t even realised that she’d moved and my heart races from the surprise.

I swallow hard, not able to keep her gaze. “Can’t sleep?” My voice is rougher than I mean it to be, harsher. I hate surprises.

“I only sleep a few hours at a time. Used to doing shifts. Hard habit to break.” She steps inside and comes closer, her eyes not leaving me. “What about you?”

“Same.” I nod. And because it’s hard to sleep when it’s too quiet around. I’m not used to things being this quiet, I’m used to having loads of people around, being surrounded by the sounds of people. There would always be someone awake, doing things around the place where we’d be staying, we’d never all be asleep at the same time.

She stands in the middle of the room, awkwardly, her arms around her waist, so different from the strong Sophia I’ve gotten used to.
